Business

Our Business Department has an inspiring and ambitious vision: ‘Developing leaders for the future’.

Through the Business Curriculum at Ridgewood School we encompass the knowledge, understanding and skills of the world of work. We offer a multitude of topics which will develop independent, creative learners who have a broad and balanced awareness of Business in society. Students are able to develop their entrepreneurial skills and we encourage students to become leaders through extra-curricular activities. We endeavour to provide a creative, engaging curriculum which inspires our students in preparation for their future pathways. 

Our Business Curriculum will provide students with the opportunity to: 

  • Analyse a range of case studies which relate to real life businesses and current affairs.
  • Make links between different areas of each course and using case studies where appropriate. 
  • Reflect on their learning and make suitable evaluations with subject specific literacy. 
  • Understand a range of financial documents and calculations, and be able to apply them to relevant situations.

KS4

OCR Cambridge National in Enterprise and Marketing.

Over the two years students are taught the content required to complete their coursework assignments and pass an external exam which is sat at the end of year 11.

The Cambridge National in Enterprise and Marketing will equip you with sound specialist knowledge and skills for everyday use. The course will introduce you to demanding material and skills; encouraging independence and creativity; and providing tasks that engage with the most taxing aspects of the National Curriculum. During this qualification, you will apply your learning in practical, real-life situations, such as:
• Carrying out market research.
• Planning a new product and pitching it to a panel of experts.
• Reviewing whether a business proposal is financially viable.
The skills and knowledge developed over this course will support you with the independence and confidence that would be relevant to any future Business and Enterprise sector.

This qualification has three mandatory units: one externally assessed (R067) and two Non-Examined Assessment (R068 and R069) units.

R067: Enterprise and Marketing Concepts

This unit is assessed by an exam.

In this unit, you will learn about the key factors to consider and activities that need to happen to operate a successful small start-up business. Topics include:

o Characteristics, risk and reward for enterprise.

o Market research to target a specific customer.

o What makes a product financially viable.

o Creating a marketing mix to support a product.

o Factors to consider when starting up and running an enterprise.



R068: Design a Business Proposal

Coursework element: Students must complete the exam board assigned scenario.

In this unit, you will identify a customer profile for a specific product, complete market research to generate product design ideas, and use financial calculations to propose a pricing strategy and determine the viability of their product proposal. Topics include:

o Market research.

o How to identify a customer profile.

o Develop a product proposal for a business brief.

o Review whether a business proposal is financially viable.

o Review the likely success of the business proposal.

Task 1

Students will carry out both primary and secondary research.
Students will also gather both qualitative and quantitative data.
Students will collate the findings of their research and then present this using appropriate methods.
A final review will then be summarised showing analysis of the overall results of Task 1.

Task 2

Students will describe their chosen customer profile based on their own market research findings.
The description should include reference to market segmentation types.

Task 3

Students will produce two design ideas.  

Task 4

Students must provide evidence of both verbal and written feedback gained from different individuals and consider their own self-assessment to identify strengths and weaknesses to their designs.
A final design will then be generated using feedback.

Task 5

Students will calculate the cost to produce their final design.
Students will choose one pricing strategy and explain why it is appropriate for their design.

Task 6

Students will consider the risks and challenges that are relevant to their own, specific design and their own business proposal.
Students will suggest methods to overcome the identified risks and challenges.



R069: Market and Pitch a Business Proposal

Coursework element: Students must continue with the set assignment scenario from R068.

In this unit, you will develop pitching skills to be able to pitch your business proposal to an external audience. Finally, you will review your pitching skills and business proposal using self-assessment and feedback gathered. Topics include:

o Develop a brand identity to target a specific customer profile.

o Create a promotional campaign for a brand and product.

o Plan and pitch a proposal.

o Review a brand proposal, promotional campaign and professional pitch.

Task 1

Students will consider the strengths, weaknesses and USP of competitors.
Analysis of the external environment will offer both opportunities and threats to the final design.
A logo, slogan and individual choice of celebrity endorsement will be selected to help brand the business promotional campaign.

Task 2

Promotional materials such as a poster, text message and social media post will be created for the business.

Task 3

Students will create and practice during lessons a pitch for the final design.
Peers will offer supportive feedback on the practice pitch.
Supporting visual aids will be created to be used in the final pitch.
Speaker notes/prompt cards will be created to support the final pitch.

Task 4

A final pitch of the final design will be presented to two members of staff within an allocated time. 
A feedback sheet will be provided following the final pitch.

Task 5

Students will conclude with a final evaluation to reflect on the success of the final pitch and areas that they would improve upon in the future. 
Students will then review their chosen promotional materials on aspects such as cost, effectiveness and awareness.

 

All results are awarded on the following scale:  

• Distinction* at Level 2 (*2) 

• Distinction at Level 2 (D2) 

• Merit at Level 2 (M2) 

• Pass at Level 2 (P2) 

• Distinction at Level 1 (D1) 

• Merit at Level 1 (M1)
