Ridgewood School Open Evening 2020
Welcome to this year's online presentation for prospective students and parents/carers.
1 October 2020
Good Evening from our Interim Headteacher Jean Pickerill
Students and parents/carers, welcome to Ridgewood School's Year 6 Open Evening. We hope that you and your family are well.
Our Year 6 Open Evening is an annual cornerstone of our school calendar and is an event that both our staff and students look forward to. Due to current Covid-19 restrictions and in order to safeguard the health and wellbeing of everyone involved, we are delivering this year's Open Evening to you here, online.
We have collated information and created a series of videos, which will give you an insight into what Ridgewood has to offer. In addition to reading the Open Evening information and watching the videos, we would encourage you to explore our website further, to find out even more about our school. The about us and information sections of our website will be particularly helpful for prospective students and their parents/carers.
If you have any further queries about our school after experiencing our virtual Open Evening, please do not hesitate to contact us and a member of staff will be in touch with you.
Our Academic Curriculum
Our academic curriculum aims to offer students of all abilities and talents an opportunity to develop their knowledge and skills across a wide variety of subjects. We are committed to providing a curriculum which is challenging yet accessible, and which fosters a love of learning, as well as enabling students to achieve success in assessments and exams.
Creating Futures is the system we use at Ridgewood to monitor students’ progress and attitude throughout the year, and to let parents/carers know how their child is performing in relation to their target in each subject. Students receive information which tells them if they are ‘on track’ to achieve their target grade, as well as an attitude grade for each subject.
For a detailed breakdown of the topics of study for each year group and subject area, please visit the curriculum section of our website. You will also find assessment information and tips for parents/carers when supporting students with their studies.
The Student Experience
(Please note that the students featured together in this video belong to the same 'year group bubbles' and were therefore allowed to be filmed in proximity to one another.)
Ridgewood School seeks to provide all students with opportunities and support to enable them to achieve and exceed their potential, both academically and as valuable members of the school community.
To broaden students' experiences at Ridgewood, we offer a wide range of schemes and initiatives that encourage their personal development. These include: our house system, personal development programme (PDP), student leadership opportunities, enrichment opportunities and rewards.
The video below will give you a speedy tour of our school site and some of the excellent facilities that we have.*
(*Please note that this footage was taken earlier in the year when more secure Covid-19 restrictions were in place and also when building work was taking place around the site.)
Year 6 Transition
Before students join us in September 2021, they will take part in our annual Transition Week in June/July 2021. This allows them to experience what life is like at Ridgewood, and introduces them to our high expectations and routines before they start in Year 7.
Due to Covid-19 restrictions, the transition process took place virtually earlier this year, for our current Year 7 students. They have coped extremely well with the transition to Ridgewood and we are really proud of them all. You can still read about our adapted transition arrangements and access key documents via the transition section of our website.
When students join us in September 2021, our new Headteacher - Mr Andy Peirson, will be in post. He is looking forward to formally welcoming all new students and their parents/carers to the school community.
Below you will find direct links to areas on our website that may be of specific interest to you. Should you have any difficulty accessing the information you require or if you have any further queries, please do not hesitate to contact us and a member of staff will be in touch with you.
Thank you for taking the time to join us for our virtual Year 6 Open Evening. We hope it has been informative and has conveyed the spirit of Ridgewood School, that is embodied by the hard work and dedication of our staff and students.
We look forward to meeting you in person in the future and welcoming you into our school community.
