Debate team through to second round of competition

Ridgewood Sixth Form students win first round match against Tapton

In the prestigious Helena Kennedy Debate Competition, Ridgewood's team has once again made a winning start. The team argued for the motion that “The Climate Emergency necessitates a two child policy”, and scored a resounding victory against Tapton School from Sheffield.

To prepare for the competition, six Year 12 students were selected from the school’s debate team (which meets weekly) to represent Ridgewood. The students involved were Brogan Showler, Josie Isle, Hollie Norton, Megan Straw, Charlotte Hair and Robyn Warman

The judging panel at the Sheffield Hallam-based event consisted of two serving solicitors, and a Senior Managing Partner of a Sheffield-based law firm.

The Ridgewood team scored an impressive 214 points out of a possible 230, with Megan Straw praised as the “Debater of the Day”, receiving the maximum mark of 35/35.

The next round will be in May. Good luck to the team!
