National basketball competition for Alicia and the Hatters
Young basketball stars step up in national competition.
Ridgewood student Alicia Vann didn’t spend her summer relaxing. Instead, she and other members of the Sheffield Hatters U13s basketball team spent the summer taking on teams from across England.
During the first weekend of the holidays, Alicia and her teammates travelled to the National Basketball Performance Centre in Manchester to represent Yorkshire. They had already gone through the rigorous eight-month regional selection process based in Leeds, and were ready to show what they could do. An incredible seven members of the Hatters were selected to play for the Yorkshire Girls U13s in the national competition.
The girls came an impressive third, beating teams from across the country. Having been unbeaten on the Saturday and losing by only two points in a tie-break situation, the girls were disappointed not to be overall champions, but did themselves proud throughout the competition.
Last season, they competed as the Sheffield Hatters U12s and won all three leagues they entered. This year, they have been entered into two National Basketball junior leagues, officiated by Basketball England. This step up will really test the girls, but they are ready for the challenge.
The Hatters will compete until the end of March 2020 in the U14 Premier and U16 Northern Conference. It marks a huge step up, but the team train hard and are already back in training twice weekly.
We will share more details of Alicia and the Hatters’ success during the year. Good luck in the national leagues!
