Debate team march on to final

Ridgewood's Sixth Form Debate Team score another victory.

We recently were delighted to tell you about the Ridgewood Sixth Form Debate Team’s early success in the prestigious Helena Kennedy Debate Centre Competition held at Sheffield Hallam University. And now we have more great news…

In the semi-final held last week, the Ridgewood team -- Jamie Tang, George Garbett, Sam Allen, Amy Nowell, Louis Bennett and Gillian Magocha -- competed against Queen Elizabeth Grammar School. They argued for the motion ‘Populism is a threat to democracy’. The judging panel once again consisted of two serving solicitors, a senior partner in a local law firm, and a Professor of Law from Sheffield Hallam University.

We are thrilled to announce that the judges unanimously agreed that Ridgewood won the debate! Congratulations must also go to Sam Allen, who received the maximum score of 30/30 from the judges, and George Garbett, who was given the ‘Debater of the Day’ Award.

Throughout the competition, the team have been positively supported and encouraged by their peers from the A level Politics class who also attended the session to observe, accompanied by Mrs Rhodes and Mr Carlin.

In the final, the Ridgewood Debate Team will be competing against Tapton School. We will share the result as soon as the competition has taken place.

Good luck Ridgewood!
