Support and Enrichment
What enrichment opportunities can I access at in the Sixth Form at Ridgewood?
Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award
Valued highly by both universities and employers, Duke of Edinburgh Gold is a highly prestigious, nationally recognised qualification. We offer all Sixth Form students the opportunity to take part in the Gold Award, irrespective of their previous level of achievement. The award enables students to develop a vast range of skills, both physical and mental, and they are supported by specialist, highly trained staff. Ridgewood School hosts the largest Duke of Edinburgh Award cohort within Doncaster and has a proven track record of great success.
Students involved with the Young Enterprise programme at Ridgewood have won almost 40 awards in just four years – an amazing achievement. The programme provides students with the opportunity to run their own business, source finance, manufacture a product and sell it to members of the public. Being part of Young Enterprise means students develop skills such as teamwork and leadership, as well as experiencing first-hand the challenges of launching and managing a successful business. Throughout the scheme, students work alongside large commercial businesses, providing them with a fantastic opportunity to network and create useful contacts.
If you want to make a difference with students in our main school, and have the skills and qualities of compassion, active listening and offering support and guidance, our mentoring programme is for you. Students are trained in the skills of mentoring, and are paired with main school students who they work with throughout the year, seeing their mentees grow in confidence as a result of their input. The benefits of this scheme are immeasurable and include students developing their own leadership and communication skills as well as the reward of helping others.
National Citizens Service (NCS)
Ridgewood School is proud of having formed an exciting partnership with the Doncaster Rovers Club Foundation in order to provide students with opportunities to take part in the NCS programme. Students complete the scheme during the summer holidays and spend two weeks away from home; the first week involves a residential activity and the second week is spent volunteering within local charities. In addition to forging new friendships and collaborations, students can ‘give back’ to a community and develop a range of transferable skills that stand them apart from their peers.
In addition to their scheduled lessons, students at our Sixth Form have the opportunity to complete a Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC). MOOCs are online courses offered by a variety of renowned universities from around the world, and enable students to access a variety of subjects. MOOCs enable students to experience university level study in a flexible and supportive online environment.
Enrichment and Pastoral Support
Throughout their two years in the Sixth Form, students will take part in dedicated sessions hosted by a range of visitors from across the spectrum of employment and academia, including representatives from Russell Group universities, the emergency services, and Members of Parliament. In Year 12, the focus is on developing study skills and effective revision techniques. In Year 13, students are prepared for their chosen career paths with presentations from a range of universities (including Oxford, Cambridge, Leeds and Nottingham) and apprenticeship organisations. These sessions are followed up during dedicated character curriculum tutorials each day with students’ personal achievement tutors.
In the Sixth Form at Ridgewood, we place great emphasis on culture, creativity and rhetoric, and we believe that our students should develop skills for life which make them well rounded individuals. All our sixth form students will deliver presentations on political and social issues, as part of their preparation for university and employment interviews. In preparing their own presentations, each sixth form student will develop the skills of planning, public oracy and rhetoric.
