The Captain Tom 100 Challenge

Inspired by Sir Captain Tom's £38.9M fundraising achievement for the NHS, several of our sixth form students have been taking on a challenge of their own.

Thursday 15 April 2021

Like many millions of other people around the country, our staff and students were captivated by Sir Captain Tom Moore's heroic efforts to raise for money for the NHS last year.

Saddened by his recent passing and inspired not only by his fundraising but by his incredible resilience throughout his life, several of our sixth form students decided to mirror Captain Tom's 100 laps of his garden in his memory.

Joining forces as form groups, students were asked to pick a task that they could all complete either 100 times or for 100-minutes across a week. Ideas ranged from 100 sit-ups a day and a 100-minute cook-a-thon, to some more sedate activities, such as reading a 100 pages of a favourite book or taking a gentle 100-minute walk with their family bubble.

However our students chose to get involved, it was also an opportunity for them to reflect on their own resilience during what has been a very difficult and challenging year – requiring a whole new way of learning from them, without the in-person support of their teachers and peers. Well done to all of the students who took part!

Do you want to take on the Captain Tom 100?

If you would like to help build on Captain Tom's amazing legacy, on Friday 30 April (which would have been his 101st birthday) the Captain Tom Foundation (a charity set up by his family) are asking everyone, of all ages and abilities, to take part in the Captain Tom 100.

Everyone is invited to take on a challenge around the number 100 anytime and anywhere over Captain Tom's birthday weekend...

  • Think up your 100 challenge. It can be anything you like – from walking 100 metres to baking 100 cakes or writing 100 letters

  • Take on your 100 any time between Friday 30 April and Monday 3 May

  • Fundraise or donate to The Captain Tom Foundation - you can download our fundraising pack here
