Debate team update – we won!

Ridgewood win South Yorkshire inter-school debate contest.

We are delighted to announce that the debate team from Ridgewood School Sixth Form has been crowned the overall winners of the prestigious Helena Kennedy Inter-School Debate Competition. Following on from our previous stories about the team’s progress in the competition, we can now share details of the fabulous final and Ridgewood’s success.

Throughout 2019, Ridgewood’s team has taken on schools across South Yorkshire in this annual competition. The team had already beaten Queen Elizabeth Grammar School in the semi-final, before facing Tapton School from Sheffield, in the final.

The judging panel included a Senior Partner in a law firm, three serving solicitors, and a Professor of Law at Sheffield Hallam. Ridgewood successfully convinced the judging panel that ‘childhood vaccinations should be compulsory’.

The debate team was made up of Louis Bennett, Gillian Magocha, Samuel Allen, Jamie Tang, Amy Nowell and George Garbett.

The judges commended the Ridgewood team for their clear, persuasive and well-supported presentations. Their confidence in the rebuttal stage was highlighted for particular praise too. The judges also praised the teamwork exhibited by the wider Ridgewood team who supported their peers prior to the debate with their research, and by critiquing their performance in the rehearsals. The wider team was made up of Emily Noble, Emma Stapleton, Ben Conway and Will Hobbs.

Huge congratulations to the team and thanks to all the staff involved with supporting the students.
